Why structured data matters for LLMs

Search engines used to be the main consumers of structured data. That has changed. Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity now parse JSON-LD and Schema.org markup to understand what your business does, what products you sell, and what questions you answer. When a user asks an AI assistant to recommend a product or explain a topic, the model looks for structured signals it can trust. A well-implemented Organization schema tells the model your official name, logo, and description. A FAQPage schema gives it pre-formatted answers it can cite directly. Without these signals, the model has to guess - and it usually guesses wrong or picks a competitor that made the effort. Structured data is no longer just an SEO best practice. It is the bridge between your website and the AI models that are rapidly replacing traditional search.

Frequently asked questions

What is structured data and why does it matter for AI?

Structured data is machine-readable markup you add to your HTML using formats like JSON-LD to describe your content. AI models like ChatGPT and Claude use it to understand what your site is about, which makes them more likely to cite you in their answers.

What Schema.org types should my site have?

At a minimum, every site should have an Organization or WebSite schema. E-commerce sites need Product schemas, blogs need Article, local businesses need LocalBusiness, and sites with Q&A content should implement FAQPage.

How does structured data help ChatGPT find my business?

When ChatGPT encounters a page with clean JSON-LD, it can extract your business name, description, products, and FAQ answers as structured facts. Without it, the model has to infer all of this from unstructured text, which is less reliable and often inaccurate.

What is the difference between JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa?

JSON-LD is a JavaScript-based format that lives in a script tag and is the format recommended by Google and preferred by AI crawlers. Microdata and RDFa are inline HTML attributes that are harder to maintain and less commonly parsed by LLMs.

How does LLCrawler validate my structured data?

We crawl your homepage, extract every JSON-LD block, parse the Schema.org types and properties, and compare them against the requirements for AI visibility. The result is a scored report with critical issues, improvements, and concrete fixes.
